I have a need to lock several columns so they occupy columns 0 thru 4 and the remaining columns can be grabbed and moved. Suggestions for how to accomplish this? I've seen all the code for FixedHeaders, but that's not what i need.

Form the description of what you want to achieve it seems that you should use FixedHeader. Why you say that this isn’t what you are looking for? What exactly does not meet your needs of using FixedHeaders?

No. FixedHeaders is completely different. Fixed Headers purpose is to prevent columns from scrolling off screen. I want to prevent some columns from being moved around while others can be moved
You could canceled BeforeColPosChanged event, if the customer is trying to move specific column. You could use code like:
if (e.ColumnHeaders[0].Column.Key == "Column 3")
e.Cancel = true;
