The default behavior that I am seeing is the following:

Single click on the ComboBox tool - the caret is postioned in the text where you have clicked.

Double click on the ComboBox tool - all text is selected regardless of where you are clicking.

So you are looking for a way to mimic the double click on the combobox with a single click?
