Win Client on .NET 4.0 without .NET 2.0

Is it possible to run the Win Client v10.2 controls without having .NET 2.0 installed? I was advise by a sales associate that I could do this. However, the installation notes displayed during the installation process states that .NET 2.0 is required. I only want to install .NET 4 windows client. If not, are there plans to provide this capability?
