I'm not sure. Have you tried mousing over the expansion indicator in the grid to see what roles are available? If there is a role specifically for the ExpansionIndicator element, then I would think you can change the image on that role.

But I think since the grid doesn't support changing the image by default, there may not be a UIRole for it.
