The controls are drawn with a “Red X” when an exception happens in their OnPaint method. However without more information it would be difficult to know what is causing this exception. Can the issue be reproduced reliably or it happens at random? Let me know what the exception type, exception message and the stack trace (you may need to configure VS to break on all exceptions for this - https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/x85tt0dd.aspx ) are. Also it would be great if you are able to provide us with a small sample which reproduces the issue.
