I have discovered a bug with the WebHierarchicalDataSource and ASP Update Panels in ASP.Net 2008 Vol 2 CLR 3.5 with latest Hotfix that has been replicated by the technical staff:
If you add a WebHierarchicalDataSource inside an ASP UpdatePanel, the computer's RAM (2 GB) usage soars to near 100% and one of my two processor cores went to over 90% while the other one jumped to near 75% for several minutes. Once I finally got control back and tried to run the app, I got a System.OutofMemoryException error, and every time I tried to go back to the Design view, the same error was thrown. Closing and reopening VS and trying to open the project when the last page edited was the page with this condition in design view again resulted in the same error.
The bug number for this issue is BR35069. No resolution time has yet been given.
