Is there a way to detemine either on the client or server the current column sort order?
I need to know whether the sort is descending or ascending prior to export.

You were correct. I can get the values both client and server. I didnt realize I was doing a reet of the columns on my export prior to capturing the sortindicator.

Pehaps I am trying to capture in the wrong event. I will revist but I swore the sort indicator was always empty when I tried to get that value.

Yes Rumen... thats what I started implementing yesterday until i was sidetracked.
I've used the SortIndicator property of the column to determine whether a particular column is sorted. It's available on the column object, in both server-side code and client-side code.

This is not something that I can find in the public API as well. Maybe you can hook the client-side sort event and store the sorting in a global javascript variable upon each sorting. You can probably use the AfterSortColumn documented here:
