Can you please change the implementation of this function so that it stores the helper counter in the HttpContext or RouteData.DataTokens. When a control is used inside an editor template the ViewData is not persisted back to the parent page and so the counter doesn't work.

I've logged a development issue with number 138568 and opened a private case (CAS-113028-J4T6D2) for you which you can now see in your active cases in your account and linked it to that development issue so that you can track it's progress. You can view the status of the development issue connected to that case by selecting the "Development Issues" tab when viewing that case on the web site.
