I recommend you check out this blog post. There's nothing extra special that our controls need, but VS is something of a resource hog. The key takeaway is don't skimp on hard drive speed.
I currently have a Lenovo ThinkPad t60 (maybe t60p). It more than suffices for what I need to do on it, and I've been pretty happy with it..
I saw a Lenovo out there a couple of days ago that had dual hard drives. That's gotta speed things up a bit. It was under U$D2000.
